こしかけ【腰掛け】

1 〔座席〕 a seat; 〔木･石の長いす〕 a bench; 〔背もたれのついた 1 人用のいす〕 a chair; 〔床几〕 a stool; 〔教会の信徒席の〕 a pew; 〔階段状の野外観覧席〕 《米》 bleachers; 〈集合的に〉 seating.

●箱を腰掛けにして休む rest, using a box as a seat; sit on a box and have a rest.

2 〔一時の身の置きどころ〕 a stepping-stone 《to something else》.

●この仕事は本当にやりたいことが見つかるまでの腰掛けにやっているまでだ. I'm only doing this job temporarily until I find something I really want to do. | This is just a temporary job till I can find a job I really want to do.

・彼は腰掛けにその地位についた. He accepted the position as a temporary expedient [stepping-stone (to something better)].

腰掛け仕事 a stopgap [makeshift] job; just a temporary job.
